UltraBomb is a pop-punk band formed by three talented seasoned musicians from three different countries.
Having formed in July 2021, UltraBomb released two albums in four years—Time To Burn (2022) and Dying To Smile(2024). Not to be stopped there, founding members Greg Norton (Hüsker Dü), Finny McConnell and Jamie Oliver (the other Jamie Oliver) added members Ryan Smith (Soul Asylum) guitars and vocal, and drummer Derek O'Brien (Social Distortion/Agent Orange), to release The Bridges That We Burn (DC Jam Records/Virgin Music Group) released May 1.
This album is not only fantastic, but also shows that music brings people together from all over the world, all walks of life and all ages.
There is no age limit on music, no estimated retirement age. Music is timeless and ageless. Showing the world that its never too late to start something new!
When listening to the album for the first time, I thought it sounded a little like Ugly Kid Joe, The Romones, and Jane’s Addiction all meshed together. Some pretty melodies and sounds, some purposeful shouting, a lot of rebellion.
To my extreme pleasure while doing research, I found that Greg Norton was in fact quite seasoned having started his career in the late ‘70s. To have such a long standing career and still doing new works! That is the dream.
At 47, I question if I have a bit too much young energy. I still jump at concerts, dance all night, have random zoomies… Well how can I have too much when the band on stage ranges from 30 to 70?
Music doesn’t judge you by age, why should I pretend to be prim and proper. That’s how music really reminds me to live out loud. Im grateful to all of the musicians who have stayed with it throughout the decades and stay relevant.
“No Cap” has to be my favorite song on this album. Again, the high energy this punk band brings made me feel the urge to jump around and fist punch air. I’ll be playing this song as my summer anthem this year, I believe. I can already envision the windows down, stereo blasting, this grandma chanting “NO CAP” with the song on her way to grocery store.
I also enjoyed “Sicko Rants” for its ability to verbalize my hatred for being gas lit, and “Mosquito Crucifixion” because, well, Mosquito Crucifixion… need I say more.
When the energy is high this spring as the weather turns, put on a little UltraBomb’s The Bridges That We Burn to get the energy pumping! You’ll be punching air too (in a good way).
