In support of his latest album released late last year—They Were Always Here—Philly area singer/screamer/rapper Zero 9:36 (Matthew Cullen) has been on the road as part of a 21-date headlining tour—which included a stop in Columbus, Ohio at A&R Music Bar on Saturday, April 18.
Despite technical difficulties half way through recently released opening song “Make Me Feel,” which features both tour support artists, Zero 9:36 showcased a solid set with a versatile blend of hip-hop and rock—performing mostly heavier songs and a few slower songs.
Zero pumped up the large crowd throughout the show, encouraging movement and circle pits; especially during new song “Here To Bleed,” when crowd surfers filled the air, one after another.
Other songs performed included crowd singalong radio hit “Adrenaline” from 2021, short and sweet industrial undertoned rap heavy banger “Kill Me,” Zero early years song “Self Destruct,” Hollywood Undead featured song “The End/Undead” and more.
Through the years, Zero 9:36 has accumulated many accolades.
Alongside touring with many artists (in the U.S., Europe and Australia)—including: Shinedown, Neck Deep, Hollywood Undead, Three Days Grace, Asking Alexandria, Nothing More, Bullet For My Valentine, The Plot In You, The Hu—he has also musically collaborated with many others—including: No Love For The Middle Child (Jonathan Dolese), Wage War (Cody Quistad), The Plot In You (Landon Tewers), Travis Barker, grandson, EKOH, Ice Nine Kills, Atreyu (Brandon Saller), The Warning, Theory Of A Deadman, Scarlxrd.
Despite such notoriety and experience, Zero remains humble and grounded.
“We are completely independent; we do this all on our own, so we are grateful for all your support,” he told the crowd. “Thanks for being here tonight.”
With the solid Columbus’ performance and having four albums and an EP under his belt, Zero 9:36 only continues to progress.
Prior to Zero, fans were riled up for elijah as nearly everyone seemed familiar with the pop-punk-metalcore solo artist, who released his debut album The Lowest last year.
Backed by a bassist, guitarist and drummer, the crowd screamed along to all of elijah’s lyrics (including: “Guilty,” “Harder To Lie,” and Matty Mullins/Memphis May Fire featured song “Human”) as he engaged with the crowd—making eye contact, fist bumping fans and even jumping off stage to join in on mosh pit love.
“Right now it’s tough to afford groceries, gas for your cars and even have money to rent your home; we appreciate you spending your hard earned money to buy tickets and for taking time out to be here,” Elijah told fans.
New York band Downswing, who have been in the scene nearly a decade, kicked the night off with a heavy metalcore performance, firing the crowd up with fierce breakdowns and notable hardcore vocals.
“We are here to wake you up!,” shouted vocalist Harrison Seanor. Beyond any doubt, that goal was well achieved, and then some.
