Interview: 12 Stones' lead vocalist Paul McCoy

By Neil Shumate, OOTB Publications

After six years, hard rock Louisiana band 12 Stones returned in February with a well-received new song titled “Golden Child,” and a joint venture between SV Records and Judge & Jury Records.

Judge & Jury was founded by multi-platinum producer Howard Benson (Daughtry, Flyleaf, My Chemical Romance, Skillet) and Three Days Grace drummer and songwriter Neil Sanderson.

12 Stones plans to release more music this year, which includes the just released re-worked version of their 2007 hit song “World So Cold,” which features guest vocalist Lyric Noel.

The song is accompanied by a Levine Pictures’ music video that portrays a bit of Jekyll and Hyde—one side consumed by anger and rage, with the other side weighed down by sadness and emotion.

In this OOTB Interview, lead vocalist Paul McCoy discusses the new song and its personal attributes, perseverance, upcoming tour, future plans.

With “World So Cold” being re-released after its first time in 2007, how did you decide on what elements to change, including adding Lyric Noel, and what all to keep the same?

Both versions of “World So Cold” are very important to me. I don’t even think it was a conscious decision on what stayed and what got altered.

Our song writing process has always been very organic in the sense that we don’t try and force anything.

Most of the time, the song will tell us where it needs to ebb and flow.

In your opinion, what makes the world so cold and dark currently? And how so?

In my opinion, I believe that the world continues to get darker and colder because we are all scared of the unknown, and fear can turn aggressive.

Humans inherently operate in survival mode most of our lives—fight or flight on a global scale has become second nature.

On the other side of that, what gives you hope and brightness in today’s world? And how so?

For me, personally, I am given hope through music and its therapeutic, mood altering powers. I feel that music is so powerful.

Every time someone says to me, “12 Stones’ music got me through some tough times,” that makes all the dark times worth it.

After such longevity in music since forming in 2000, what inspires you to keep pushing forward and continuing the music journey?

I’ve debated over this for years.

Sometimes I think I’m too stupid to quit. [laughs]

Other times, I realize that I have a chance to make a positive impact in someone else’s life by sharing some of my story.

This music is my therapy. It’s how I’m able to cope with the darkness that surrounds the world.

What are your plans and goals as far as releasing new material or more touring? What details or teasers can you currently provide?

We’ve got a busy spring and summer ahead with the Creed Summer Of ‘99 Cruise and the tour with Powerman 5000 and Makes My Blood Dance.

After that, I hope that we can continue playing more shows.

I’d also LOVE to be able to release a new album this year.

Where do you hope to see yourself in another decade—both musically and personally?

In a perfect world, we are still releasing music that helps spread positivity back into the world.

I would love to be able to focus on music full time.

Fingers crossed.
