Album Review: Remember The Monsters, War Of Attrition

By Brandi Genzen, OOTB Publications

Remember The Monsters hit the scene in 2016 with members from all over the United States—Arizona, California, South Carolina.

Together they formed an alt-rock band that happens to cover popular pop songs.

I for one was taken back by their version of “Toxic” by Brittany Spears. I’d probably call you a liar if you couldn’t name one Brittany Spears song. We all had a favorite whether it was secretly or not. It was a vibe.

I can say with certainty that Remember The Monsters version of “Toxic” is as good, if not better than Brittany Spears. Still sexy even, in its own way. A song worthy of a metal rendition.

Remember The Monster’s debut LP War Of Attrition—releasing this Friday, April 24–is definitely my new obsession.

War Of Attrition defined: strategy of wearing down the enemy’s strength through continuous losses.

The whole album is like a downward spiral of breakups, regrets and haunting memories. The ride though seems more relatable than it does depressing.

I find it akin to aimlessly watching a light bulb dim. You relate to the bulb, but are not crying about the light going out, knowing that eventually a new glow will take its place.

The “Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?” cover song is my favorite of the album (though really they are all my favorite).

I am not familiar with the original Taylor Swift version of the song. Unlike “Toxic,” I had no comparison. What a way to add the sprinkle to an already killer album. If I wasn’t already sold, “Who’s Afraid…” would have sealed the deal.

I love how many of the tracks begin with a soft pop like melody, then is brilliantly mixed into rock-and-roll. It leaves a feeling of satisfaction in your ears and head. A little tingle in your soul. A ‘lil smile of satisfaction, like after having your favorite meal.

All I can say is I want more! Can’t wait for more. Looking forward to memorizing every lyric and beat! If you pass up this one, your loss.
