Concert Review: Pecos & The Rooftops in Columbus, Ohio

By James Magill, OOTB Publications

This is the fourth time in as many years that I have been lucky enough to catch Pecos & The Rooftops performing at The Bluestone in Columbus, Ohio.

Each time, I leave with no voice and slightly overcome with emotion, and Thursday, March 12 was no different.

We arrived a little after 8 p.m., and the opener was in full swing.

Mac Hankins & The Moonlighters rocked out—engaging the crowd and spewing forth a great rock set that set the tone for what was about to come.

Pecos & The Rooftops took the stage a little before 9:30 p.m. and launched into a a raucous set, an eclectic mix of soulful originals, entwined with some crowd favorite covers.

Frontman Pecos Hurley joked with the crowd, told stories and did his job with the best of them, engaging and putting on a great show.

They played a great cover of David Allen Coe’s “You Never Even Called Me By Mu Name” before launching into a medley of covers—band members sang versions of Tim McGraw’s “ I Like It, I Love It,” Blink 182’s “All The Small Things”, and a blistering cover of Alice In Chains’ “Man In The Box.” It was a great piece of showmanship that really pumped the crowd up.

After the cover medley, the band played their hearts out—whether it was jerkers like “Wouldn’t Have To Miss You” or crowd pleasing party anthems like “11 Beers.”

The Texans closed the show with “This Damn Song,” which is one of the best songs of the last ten years.

Pecos & The Rooftops is one of my favorite bands and it was a phenomenal show. If you haven’t listened to Pecos & The Rooftops, you need to. As always, a spectacular show.
