Album Review: Help(2)

By Christian Cole, OOTB Publications

Any time a unique set of artists want to pull together in the name of positivity, I’m game. With Help(2), the follow up to the 1995 charity relief effort LP Help, we get some genuine intrigue.

From Olivia Rodrigo to Fontaines D.C., and Arctic Monkeys’ first track in a handful of years, it’s hard to not find yourself interested in this compilation.

Help(2) kicks off with a soothing and soulful comeback from Arctic Monkeys, opening the album with an immaculate vibe, followed by a feature laden effort from Damon Albarn, which sends us in on a high note.

While some moments in the 23 tracks are certainly less memorable or moving, there is a stellar slew of songs from an incredible array of artists.

The piano led “Lilac Wine” by Arooj Aftab & Beck is somber and chilling. Depeche Mode’s “Universal Soldier” finds them at their best in years. “Say Yes” from Beabadoobee is beautiful and spacious.

One of the best bands on the scene right now, Fontaines D.C., lend the track “Black Boys On Mopeds” and it is stunning and melancholic. PULP, who just saw a triumphant and massive return to their career, also make an appearance with “Begging For Change.”

The album wraps up with Olivia Rodriguez slow-crooning an absolutely stunning “The Book Of Love,” and brings an incredible end to a truly well-poised and presented charity effort for War Child U.K..

All in all, this is a truly stellar list of modern musicians from all walks and sonic fronts, and they pair together so perfectly to fight one important cause— and that alone is a good reason to support.

I highly recommend this compilation to any fan of nearly any genre, or someone looking to find something to love that they may not find anywhere else.
