Interview: Goatsilk vocalist, guitarist Jhode Romero

By Neil Shumate, OOTB Publications

Denver-based modern alt-metal rockers Goatsilk have been at it since releasing their 2018 EP Time Waits For No Man

Comprised of former and current musicians from Motograter, Flaw, Eva To Adam, Embryonic Autopsy, Kobra And The Lotus, the band continues to evolve forward with their latest heavy hitting song release: “Separate,” which follows their song “Bury Your Halo.”

Goatsilk founder, vocalist, guitarist, songwriter Jhode Romero took time out for this interview to discuss the band’s latest single, writing, their music’s intent, goals for the year and more.

In your personal life, how does the band’s latest song “Separate” relate to you personally, tying in with what the song represents in a vague sense?

“Separate” is really about recognizing when something in your life can’t move forward with you anymore—that could be a mindset, a relationship, or even a version of yourself.

For me, it reflects that moment of clarity where you realize holding on is doing more damage than letting go. It’s uncomfortable, but sometimes necessary.

When writing overall, do you approach lyrics or music first? Or a little bit of both?

Most of the time, the music comes first. A riff or atmosphere sets the emotional direction, and the lyrics naturally follow that feeling.

Every now and then, a lyric idea sparks the whole thing, but we try not to force anything—we let the song evolve naturally.

What do you hope resonates with listeners to take away from Goatsilk—musically and lyrically?

More than anything, we want people to feel seen.

The music is heavy, but it’s also honest.

Lyrically, it’s about dealing with real emotions and real struggles.

If someone listens and feels like they’re not alone in what they’re going through, that’s the biggest win for us.

When did you first realize music is meant for you? What was that moment?

There wasn’t a single defining moment, it was more that music never stopped being part of my life. No matter what else was happening, I always came back to it.

At some point you realize it’s not just a hobby, it’s something you need.

What are Goatsilk’s goals, ambitions and plans throughout 2026?

2026 is about forward motion.

Releasing new music, getting back to playing shows, and rebuilding everything with purpose.

We want to stay consistent, reconnect with our core supporters, and keep expanding without losing what makes Goatsilk what it is.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

Just a huge thank you to everyone supporting independent music.

Every listen, share, and comment actually matters more than people realize.
