With riffs as nasty as the album title—The Great Satan—Rob Zombie delivers a high quality addition to his music catalog; a record that will be sure to please longtime fans, in addition to new comers who happen to stumble into his world with this release—out this Friday, Feb. 27 via Nuclear Blast Records.
With 12-full songs, two interludes, and a concluding instrumental, the 15 total tracks on this record offers a sampling of what’s made Rob Zombie dangerous and fun through his storied career.
With Mike Riggs offering his guitar work and Josh Freese applying additional drums in the studio, the hits are hard, uptempo, and are dripping in the vibes of something spooky that lurks around every corner.
The three opening songs will be absolute crowd pleasers, if added to a live show set list.
“F.T.W 84” starts things off with a dystopian theme. Layers of guitars on the verse create that signature soundscape that feels like a dive into an aggressive horror film.
“Tarantula” is heavy, fast, and full of hooks. The ending of that song goes half time and the cutoff dynamics are sudden and feels like an unexpected end of a ride.
“(I’m a) Rock ‘n Roller” is an instant classic that basks in the old of idea of the show going on. It revels in the declaration of dirty origins and an obligation to keep things rolling.
“Heathen Days” and “Punks and Demons” are the clearest throwbacks to the White Zombie sound. Driving guitar rhythms and high energy from start to finish makes these songs feel like old school fun.
The slow burn of “Sir Lord Acid Wolfman” has this pirate like call-and-response during the low-fi sounding verse. This minimalist sound feels restrained, but when the chorus kicks in the space is filled with wonder and I’m left imaging this one gets played live during the tour later this year.
“Revolution Motherfuckers” is carried by this marching rhythm that allows for some entertaining drum play. From the chorus through the bridge into the second verse, the drums play around the central marching sound and the results are fantastic.
Two songs towards the end of the record utilize pipe organs in such different ways that compliments the range of production methods used to achieve Rob Zombie’s various signature sounds.
“The Black Scorpion” seems to lead you through a haunted carnival with screeching guitars while “Unclean Animals” is layered in effects like a soundtrack dripping in shimmering sleeze.
Rob Zombie keeps doing exactly what he wants, and I’m still here for it.
The Great Satan joins an extensive catalog of quality high energy rock that rests comfortably with the dark and dirtier aspects of music.
Give this album a spin and catch Rob Zombie on the Freaks On Parade Tour this summer with Marilyn Manson, The Hu, Orgy.
