Album Review: Kula Shaker, Wormslayer

Kula Shaker has been rocking the music scene since 1990. This funky, groovy, grungy band has the ability to stay current, yet classic, bringing yet another timeless album to life: Wormslayer (Strange F.O.L.K. Records). 

 

The entire LP—releasing tomorrow, Friday, Jan. 30–had me clapping, tapping, snapping and head bobbing the entire album. This new release is absolute gold with its psychedelic sound. 

I cannot exactly put a finger on Kula’s genre. In my mind, it’s like the soundtracks to Beach Blanket Bingo, mixed with Austin Powers, with a sprinkle of The Doors.

Kula Shaker began in London England in the ‘90s. According to the UK they are a British pop, psychedelic rock, raga rock band. 

Having worked with big labels such as Columbia and Sony BMG, the name Kula Shaker fits perfectly. The band’s name is based off of a 9th century Indian saint and poet, there is a magic quality and mysticism to band.

Members Chrispian Mills (lead vocals, guitars, tamboura, harmonica), Alonso Bevan (bass, additional guitars, piano, vocals), Paul Winterhart (drums, percussion, occasional backing vocals), and Jay Darlington (keyboards, organ, piano, Mellotron, occasional backing vocals) have delivered psych rock like only the British can do—with a gentlemanly flair.

Wormslayer has given it all. It’s groovy, mystical, grungy, poppy, jazzy, funky, and all around rocking! 

It’s like 50’s music took LSD from the ‘70s, let loose in the ‘90s and is still as relevant as current hitters like The Struts. 

If you need a vibe change, a mood improvement, an escape from this hell reality we are currently living, Kula Shaker will take you away with Wormslayer.
