Review & Photos: Queensrÿche pay homage to their origins in Columbus

Fans were treated to exceptional live performances of Queensrÿche’s 4-song self-titled EP and their debut 9-song full length album, The Warning, last night at Newport Music Hall in Columbus.

Properly called The Origins Tour, original guitarist Michael Wilton, original bassist Eddie Jackson and longtime vocalist Todd La Torre, rhythm guitarist Mike Stone and drummer Casey Grillo, took the crowd back to the band’s early 80’s foundation—forty two years ago.

Both classic rock albums were revisited with precision as backdrops of the album covers and random bursts of smoke filled the stage. All band members were natural pros at their finest; standing on platforms, making eye contact with fans and pointing toward the crowd while everyone head banged and sang along. Top notch.

Halfway through The Warning, La Torre paused to greet attendees and introduce the one-of-a-kind special tour while expressing the band’s gratitude to fans. One fan stood up and La Torre acknowledged him for this being his 64th Queensrÿche concert.

Queensrÿche left the stage briefly after both records were performed and returned for a three song encore: “Eyes Of A Stranger,” “Prophecy” and “Empire.”

Singer-guitarist Jared James Nichols opened the night with classic southern bluesy dirty rock-and-roll, along with a bassist and drummer to bring a full sound; both whom performed brief breakdown solos and also filled backing vocals.

Nichols frequently took center stage and shredded some mind blowing electrifying solos—without a pick—while falling to his knees.

The band closed with a resounding, audience singing rendition of Sabbath’s guitar heavy “War Pigs.”

The current second US leg of The Origins Tour runs through late November before heading to Europe early 2025.
