Interview: Lostboycrow on touring, collabs, evolving

Written By Neil Shumate, OOTB Publications

Soon concluding a 23-date tour—which included dates with Switchfoot and The Strike—Northwest Pacific- Portland born, Los Angeles-based electronic alt-pop artist Lostboycrow (Chris Blair), took some down time on the road between shows and between releasing catchy new songs and dynamic videos for “Pretty In Pink” and “Dirty Dancing,” for this OOTB interview to discuss touring, collaborating, evolving and more.

Being on the road now with Switchfoot, what are some things you do on your off dates?

It’s been beautiful to just see a bunch of friends and family in Canada that I don’t get to see too often. That being said, it’s a big ol’ country, so most off days are spent driving at this point. Good food and a little exercise.

You’ve collaborated with some artists including most recently DYSN for “Dirty Dancing,” who are some other musicians or artists you would like to collaborate with?

I always love working with people I really connect with, so I’m excited to see who those artists may be over the years. That being said, I’d like to work with Kota the Friend, William Prince, Grace Enger, Ann Annie, and Renee Rapp.

How has your writing process changed, both lyrically and musically, since the release of your single “Adolescent” in 2014?

It’s been a constant ebb and flow. “Adolescent” was written before I started the project, just me and a guitar in a quiet room alone. There’s no ‘right’ or ‘best’ way to write, but I’ve found that when the lyrics and music happen simultaneously, it rings the most true for me. I think realizing and creating space for that to happen.

The more I’ve toured and performed, the more I’ve been able to take that shared connection with me into the writing process. To harness that feeling of pure shared experience and use it to get even further out of my own way. To let the song be what it wants to be.

What’s been the biggest struggle you’ve faced either in music or in your personal life and how have you overcome that?

Trusting my gut. Being specific with my goals. Being my biggest supporter.

What is next for you after this current tour with Switchfoot?

Recording so many of these new songs I’ve been able to write and share on the road. Taking care of my guinea pigs.
