Orlando, Florida multi-instrumentalist, indie-rock singer-songwriter Cat Ridgeway just launched an extensive national tour and as part of the tour she will stop in Columbus this Wednesday, Oct. 16 at Rumba Cafe with her band The Tourists along with Johnny Manchild And The Poor Bastards.
On the heels of her next full length album, Sprinter, due out Spring 2025, Ridgeway recently teased the LP with releasing “Epilogue”—her first single from the upcoming album—and after the song’s video premiered, she took time out for an interview with OOTB.
Having released such a diverse range of music (from Americana, “Giving You Up,” to Punk Rock with the recently released video and single for “Epilogue”) and with the tour kicking off, what can attendees expect to hear and see at a live show with you and your live band The Tourists?
I'm really excited to have this tour mark the beginning of a totally new era, so folks can expect to hear mostly new songs (and maybe some older tunes that have been rearranged to fit the new vibe). Genre-wise, there are definitely still threads that run between my previous work and the upcoming album Sprinter, but the newer stuff definitely leans more indie rock. In any case, we’re having a BLAST with our live show right now.
With you performing a wide, wide array of instruments and incorporating those into your songwriting and recordings, which two instruments are your favorite and why those?
I'm most comfortable on guitar and banjo these days, and I love writing on both of them because of all the alternate tuning options that are available. I also love how many sounds you can get out of the banjo specifically. When you break it down, it's a drum with a neck - I love messing with all the percussive/drum tones in addition to the usual picked/strummed string sounds.
You’ve collaborated with a number of artists, including Shawn Mullins on “Give Me Love,” and your upcoming album Sprinter—Mastered by Joe LaPorta (David Bowie, Foo Fighters)—due out Spring 2025, features many artists, including Mike Savino (Kishi Bashi, Tall Tall Trees) and Claude Coleman, Jr. (Ween) is there an artist you’d still like to collab with either vocally or instrumentally that you haven’t yet? If so, who and why them?
Oh man, I think if I could ever make some noise with Justin Vernon or Mk.Gee I would lose my mind. They've both pushed sonic limits into uncharted territory, and creating something completely singular - something that cannot be compared - is as exciting as it gets.
Where do you see yourself as an artist in five years?
Hopefully touring and creating much more art! The biggest marker of success to me right now would be to be able to support myself 100% through my own music (not having to supplement with cover gigs between tours anymore).
Is there anything else you’d like to add?
I genuinely appreciate you taking the time to chat with me and anyone who's read down this far!
