Florida’s Lydia Can’t Breathe just released groovy, rocking new single “Lifted” and with it, they’re not holding back on their love for “flower.” The band is currently on the road with the Might Be Insane Tour and will also perform at this weekend’s Inkcarceration in Mansfield, Ohio. In this interview with OOTB, vocalist Kyle Bolduc discusses their longevity, live shows, new stuff on the way and more.

Your music has a lot of diversity, a little something for everyone—from heavy in “Sheep” and “Killerz” to somewhat lighter in “Sick Now” and “Please Be Over”to even lighter in “Might Be Insane,” but overall, a little metal, a little hard rock—what influences the band to have such a diverse range of styles (even a wide range all within one song itself) when writing and why do you choose that approach?

The band appreciates all genres and styles of music, which is probably the main reason we write the way we do. We also have been always evolving to the new music that comes out each passing year that we listen to, but can never forget what made us start playing music from the start. We don’t want to be bored with the standard style of writing the same verse and chorus, maybe a bridge and then ending the song. We like to keep the listener guessing what is coming next!

Your recently released single “Lifted” kind of pays tribute to weed. The song starts of light and groovy, then it kind of creeps up and sneaks up on you and gets heavy… you know, just like some strains of THC. HaHa! Are you supporters of decriminalization of marijuana and do you support national recreational legalization, do you think it’ll ever happen?

Yes, we are big supporters of decriminalization of marijuana and support national recreation legalization. People should be able to do what they want whether it be weed or any drugs if they want to. They are going to do them regardless and it would probably lower violent drug crime.

What has been the most personal song to you that has been released so far and what makes it so personal?

To me, the most personal song is “Ups And Downs.” I wrote it when my first kid was born about how becoming a parent and teaching the youth is such an important responsibility, the lesson being told in the song is that life will have its ups and downs but we have to make the best of it.

You’ve been a band for longer than a decade. What’s the secret to keeping a band alive and well?

The secret thing is that everyone in the band has the same common goal at the time they are shooting for it. For example, if everyone in the band wants to be Metallica famous or if you want to just be a garage band or local band that only does a few little shows a year. You all have to be on the same page for everyone to get along.

You’re currently on the road with an extensive tour, called Might Be Insane. The band has a couple Ohio shows coming up, including at The Foundry in Lakewood on Thursday, July 25 and at major festival Inkcarceration in Mansfield on the campground stage.

We sound like the recordings, have a lot of high energy every night, and interact with the crowd. We also have an epic stage production that will entertain the attendees both with audio and visuals.

What are you planning for after this current tour?

We have more music already recorded that we are dropping about every 6 weeks! Also another music video soon. Then, we will be backstacking more tracks in the studio to keep dropping new music for the fans nonstop! We will also be on the road again soon after so keep an eye out for us!
