Interview: Violet Breed (feat. Tesla's Brian Wheat) vocalist AleX discusses formation, new single, future
Violet Breed—a collaborative alternative rock band featuring Tesla founding member and bassist Brian Wheat and UK singer-songwriter Alex Gonzato (AleX)—recently released their debut song “Awake,” which features Tesla’s Dave Rude on guitars, giving listeners a riveting introduction to the project.
In this OOTB interview, frontman AleX sheds light on how the project came to be, the new single, his inspiration to become a singer, what the future holds and more.
Having worked together for about ten years on various things and specifically on this project for about five years, what inspired this project to come to full fruition?
There’s that saying "right place, right time” and when Brian and I were together, the idea to form a new band and collaborate on a new project just felt right. Our inspirations and influences were in line with each other, and I think we just wanted to create something that was hard hitting, fast, catchy and wrapped in emotive lyrics.
We come from different backgrounds in terms of where we’re at musically in life, so the opportunity for me to work with someone like Brian Wheat of Tesla was such an incredible opportunity. He’s an incredible musician, mentor, producer but most importantly friend. He believes in our band. It’s just feels right. The working relationship when it comes to the song writing process is effortless.
When and how did Brian and yourself first actually meet and how did that come about?
I actually met Brian through a mutual friend when I graduated college. He was working with a band I knew. Our friendship I think sparked when he discovered how much I loved the Beatles, Queen and the solo McCartney records!
The debut track “Awake” is a remarkable introduction. What do you hope listeners will take away from Violet Breed as a whole and why did you choose “Awake” to preview what’s in store?
Naturally I think it’s always hard to pick your first debut single, but having Brian as a band member with all his experience makes it a lot easier to distinguish what songs will make the most impact with an audience.
He’s got a good set of ears!
“Awake” is a very immediate song with a big impact when that first chorus hits in… I hope listeners can sing along to the melody we’ve written and relate to lyrics. It’s direct, it’s catchy and it’s all about the now. Plus it's great to sing along with an acoustic guitar... the foundations and arrangement are very strong I think.
When did you first say to yourself, “THIS is what I want to do as a career?” What was it that made you realize that?
The moment I realised I wanted to be a part of music and pursue it as a career was when I first heard Freddie Mercury sing on the Queen album `Made In Heaven.’ I remember hearing that voice and being stunned by how someone could sing like that! Then next I saw Queen Live at Wembley 1986 on DVD and was blown away by showmanship, performance and whole spectral of the live show.
When can listeners expect an EP or LP to be released and are there any working titles for the name of the album? How many songs do you have ready?
I think at the moment we are fully focused on the new debut single 'Awake’ and getting it out there in the world! However, we’ve got plenty of material in the pipeline ready to go when the moment is right! I reckon we’ve got just over an album’s worth of material, but I think we’re considering more single releases for the future.
What are your continued goals and aspirations for Violet Breed? Where do you see the band in say, five years?
My aspirations for Violet Breed would be to continue to release more music and write more songs. At the moment I’m just enjoying the ride and taking everything as it comes to me.
It’s such a privilege to be working alongside Brian in our new band. But I would love to see Violet Breed reach the top, of course! Who wouldn't in this business?
Thank you for having me as guest! It’s been great to answer these questions.
