Album Review: David Shaw, Take A Look Inside, out Oct. 4

Written By Christian Cole, OOTB Publications

The Revivalists’ frontman David Shaw is setting to release his second solo album Take A Look Inside (Yokoko Records) on Friday, Oct. 4 to much anticipation.

Shaw—known for his soulful vocals as the lead singer of New Orleans based rock band The Revivalists—brings to the table an album that has poise and is well delivered on all fronts.

Often times, an artist’s solo effort can so closely resemble the band that bares their fame that it can feel stale, but that isn’t Shaw’s case. Of course, it boasts his signature sound, but it stands on its own; it doesn’t feel like a Revivalists’ record, and that’s being said positively. It keeps itself refreshing.

Even with a stripped down rendition of their song “Soulfight” appearing halfway through the album, it manages to feel like a genuine solo effort from an incredibly talented singer and songwriter. And the track doesn’t feel out of place either, so the whole album feels like a sensible balance of familiarity and a step forward into his own sound.

It’s a relaxing and well-written effort bordering somewhere between Folk and Americana. If you like laid back licks, smooth grooves and melody that’ll melt you away, then this will be a release for you.

Shaw will be backing this album with shows that start in October with dates all the way into March.
