Interview: The Lonely Ones on the road and in the studio

Written By Neil Shumate, OOTB Publications

Since the summer of 2019, Columbus, Ohio area hard rockers The Lonely Ones—featuring members of Bobaflex, Neverdawn, Girl Fox—have continued to garner well-deserved recognition while touring nonstop and releasing hit after hit—“Eternal Sadness," “The Lonely One,” “Flash/The Hero,” (Of the Queen cover, Brian May was quoted as saying: “What a fantastic cover! I didn’t realize they were going to go into The Hero and the whole reprise ... magnificent!" and Flash Gordon himself, Sam J Jones, added: "This is one of the best covers I have ever heard and seen. What a gifted group - The Lonely Ones are for every one of us, from the 1980’s to right now!") "Real Big Trouble,” “Change The Station,” “Dyin’ All Night Long,” “Gettin’ High,” “The Way Out,” “Bedroom Door,” “One More Time Around,” “Don’t Cry For Me.” The Lonely Ones most recently released “The Bottom.” Listen to the latest release here.

The band is endorsed by: Orange Amps, Westone Audio, Pearl Drums, Sabian Cymbals, Evan's Heads, Vater Sticks, Ibanez, Frog Amplification, Tech 21 Amplification, Michael Kelly Guitars, SIT Strings, Rare Buzz Effects and StrĂ¼ng, which is guitar string jewelry that raises money for music education.

In this interview with OOTB, lead vocalist Marty McCoy took time between current tour dates and in-studio work to discuss the band’s writing process, the pandemic’s affects, live shows and more.

How and why did you decide on choosing “The Bottom” to be released as the latest single?

We write them. We recorded them. We release them. I wish I had a cooler explanation. We live in a singles, constant content business. If you release much at the pace the consumer is used to they will find something else quick.

In general, how does your songwriting process usually go with the band, collectively?

Jymmy, Tristan, and I get in a room, throw the ideas on the table and the songs come together pretty fast. We trust each other's instincts. It is a very fun experience.

You’ve been touring quite a bit lately winning crowds over; what do you think it is about your live performances that pull crowds in to keep their attention and to keep them coming back to see you live?

We rehearse constantly. When we hit the stage we are one with the force. [laughs] We’re a well-oiled machine and the crowd can feel it.

Having somewhat more of a classic-modern hard rock sound and style, what appeals to you about past eras of rock music over today’s more modern heavy rock?

Honestly it has to do with my voice and Jymmy's guitar style. I’m not a screamer and Jymmy loves the blues. When we started writing we both decided to turn the distortion down and concentrate on choruses.

What’s the most difficult thing you’ve faced in the music industry overall and how did you overcome that, or is it still a struggle?

Covid was a very difficult time for musicians everywhere. We didn’t know if we were gonna have a career to go back to. People died. Venues closed and the world of live entertainment halted for quite a long time. We survived, but it was a very scary time on plant earth.

What’s next for The Lonely Ones?

We’re going in to the studio tomorrow. I love the studio. New music on the way.

Anything else you’d like to add?

We’re releasing a cover song in the coming weeks by one of my fave bands. It would be incredible if the original artist heard it and hated on it. [laughs]

The Lonely Ones are:

Tristan Woodruff - drums
Jymmy Tolland - guitar / vocals
