Interview: A Killer's Confession releases new single, readies for release of concept album

Written By Neil Shumate, OOTB Publications

Since forming in 2016, Cleveland, Ohio-based A Killer’s Confession (AKC) has released three full length albums; however, it isn’t until now, nearly eight years later, that band founder and frontman Waylon Reavis (formerly of Mushroomhead) feels like this is the first album of AKC; the band has found itself. Reavis even scrapped work on a previous album that was in the works to start over and focus on Victim 1 instead.

The new 10-song album, Victim 1 (MNRK Music Group), is a concept record that goes inside the head of a fictional split personality character who is a serial killer, of whom Reavis researched mental health to create. The album also incorporates the seven deadly sins. Fans have been introduced to the album with singles “Greed,” “Martyr,” “Tongue,” and most recent heavy hitter “Filth,” along with a teaser of Aaron Nordstrom (Gemini Syndrome) featured track “Voices.”

Victim 1 releases September 13 and it can now be pre-ordered here along with limited edition vinyls. The official CD release show is Sept. 20 at The Winchester in Lakewood, Ohio and tickets can be purchased here

In this interview with OOTB, fresh off touring alongside Mudvayne and Drowning Pool, Reavis discusses Victim 1, the new single “Filth,” his mask design and more.

You’ve mentioned taking about a year off to execute Victim 1. How did you approach the music and sound of the album compared to the previous three albums?

The time off was needed to flesh out the ideas of the album fully. I feel like the first three albums of A Killer’s Confession were us trying to figure out what we were and what our sound was. In my humble honest opinion, I feel like this is the first album of A Killer’s Confession.

With this being a concept album lyrically, do you expect it to ultimately be a trilogy or maybe two albums as a continuation of the same character?

I feel like we can continue the story in future albums, it is such a broad idea we could go so many ways with this concept. I’ve always been a big fan of trilogies and stories that continue into future projects.

It seems like “Filth” is the most blunt single released off the album so far, compared to “Greed” and “Martyr.” What can you tell us about the character in general and some of the lyrics?

You have to remember everything is through the killer’s eyes and inside of his mind. This was the first song to come out that you can truly hear it.

When you left Mushroomhead, you had a hiatus of sorts away from music, but you were pushed and influenced to pick up the mic again by children you used to work at a residential treatment facility. Have you had any doubts since returning and if so, how did you leave those doubts behind and continue to push through?

I’ve never had any doubts. I just knew I had a lot of hard work in front of me. Anything that’s worth doing takes a lot of hard work. If you’re willing to put in the work, you will see results.

What is the general inspiration behind the theatrics and masks of the band? Do you still work with Jason Kisner?

I still work with Jason Kisner. This mask was created by him and I am so happy with the way it turned out. We wanted to stick with something familiar, but go somewhere new. In my personal opinion, I feel like Jason knocked it out of the park.

What’s next for the band?

We have a little bit of time off and then we are doing a few shows one in August at the Gathering Of Juggalo’s and then in September we will be doing our album release party. During that time, I will continue working on our new stuff for the next album.
