Phoenix, Arizona’s Escape The Hive gives life to classic hard rock on their album This Is Gonna Sting (Shock Records/The Vanity Music Group), and the recent release of single “I Can See It” from the album showcases the five-piece band’s straightforward, big rock-and-roll style.

In this OOTB interview with lead vocalist Michael Thomas Beck, he discusses the band’s new release, their classic rock appeal, new material in the works and more.

How and Why did you decide on "I Can See It" as the next single to be released from This Is Gonna Sting?

We actually had plans on releasing a different song. But we did one of those “take a poll” things on social media, and the consensus was “I Can See It.” And you got to give the crowd what they want, right? It just seemed right.

Your music has a 70's era big rock sound, overall. What is it about that era of music that appeals to you the most, compared to today's modern rock?

The biggest appeal is that it's real. Hey that rhymes! [laughs] But that's really what it is. When we play live, we don't use tracks. We don't use extra packaged harmonies or anything of the sort. A real rock band standing with real instruments in front of real microphones playing to crowds that appreciate that. That kind of encapsulates what we do in a nutshell.

Being a sort of newer band on the scene since 2021, what's been the biggest challenge or obstacle and how have you overcame that?

I guess just getting our music out there. We've been lucky that we've all played in different levels of successful bands previously. But this particular band I think for all of us, is something really special. We all get along so well. There are no dark clouds or overblown egos within the band that change your mood in a negative way. It doesn't always work that way, but it is incredibly refreshing. And I think that shows in our live show as well as even on the record!

When you're not working with Escape The Hive, what else are you involved with?

I own SoundVision Recording Studios here in Mesa, Arizona. And I work as a recording engineer and producer for other bands.

Is the band currently recording new music following last fall’s album release of This Is Gonna Sting?

We are! We are about halfway through recording our follow-up release. And that release should be on shelves sometime early next year. We are playing a lot of songs from the new record live while on tour. It's great to give the songs a chance to develop more organically. I love the studio environment. But you can't replace playing in front of an audience with anything. And those songs really get honed in on while on tour.

Are there any touring plans?

We have been on our summer tour that started in California in July. It has taken us through Arizona, Nebraska and Iowa. And we've got more coming this fall.
